The Joy Factor

I love doing. I love being done.

11:00. Draft cover letter. Edit cover letter. Print cover letter. Correct cover letter. Print cover letter. Smudge cover letter. Print cover letter.

Find “about ” and ” credits” files. Waffle over how much to use. Or how little. Copy and paste. Edit. Format. Correct. Print. Correct. Reformat. Print.

Copy and paste seven files. Edit. Format. Print draft. Damn. Fight with Word. Curse Microsoft. Curse again. Oh. There must have been a page break there. Delete that. Argh. There are two copies of one file – where did the second one come from? Print. Proof again. S**t. Yet another not-so-elegant transition. Forgot a notation. Take a break before I print. Review. Print.

Find camera. Photograph the subject. Upload.  Where are the photos?!!  Oh, I’ve updated operating system since last upload. Poke around. Find photos. Import to iPhoto.  Edit. Blah! Bad shadows. Rinse and repeat. Matte or gloss? Print. Border is inconsistent. Print again.

3pm. Did I have lunch? How do I indicate which image goes with which story? Oh. Doh: number them. Search for razor-point Sharpie. Great gussie! Where are my mailers? Mad search ensues.

4:45. Dash to post office. Address one of their mailers at counter. Hand to clerk. Swipe debit card at 4:58 pm.

5:15. Pour wine. Sit on screened porch. Stare into space. Stare into space.stare into space. stare into spacestareintospace. . .

It took SIX hours to get a twenty-page proposal printed and mailed. SIX. (Well, really five, plus the hour looking for my stash of Priority Mail mailers and the Sharpie. But still.)

Twenty years ago, this project would have taken nearly a week to prepare. Remember when we had to type, and use correction tape or liquid, and retype (and retype) to get it perfect? Then save to a floppy disk and go to Kinkos to print and copy en route to the post office? (I’m still too ticked at HP to give them any credit.) But remember when  you had only a dot matrix printer?

I LOVE MY MAC.

His name is Newton. He works hard for me. He holds my data, and he finds it when I ask, nicely. He makes me look good. And he does it quickly. Usually.

Carpe diem

Delicious Breadcrumbs

Wendy with the masters of passion, Chris and Janet Attwood

It has always been fascinating to me that parents and teachers expect kids that are getting ready to finish high school to know what they are going to be when they grow up. There is so much pressure for them to know much more then they can comprehend at seventeen years old.
Because of my life experience, I am an advocate of kids that do not have a clear idea about their career path to attend the University of Life for awhile. That is where I received my ChB degree from.  I am a Compassionate Human Being and share this degree with pride. This break in formal education and training allowed me to really ponder what it was I wanted to contribute to the world. Sometimes this reflecting happened consciously and other times it was more on a subconscious level.  Either way, it let me start to uncover what I was really passionate about.
Most people I know in their late thirties and early forties, have no idea what they want to be now that they are adults. They are meandering through life, creating a little of this and a little of that; somewhat enjoying the journey, yet not getting the most of what they want out of their life.
What do you want to accomplish? Do you have the seeds of the next Martin Luther King germinating? Maybe a little bit of Martha Stewart or even Emeril?  Some people are here for a grandiose purpose, others for something that is a bit more tame.  Whatever mark you are here to leave on the world, it all starts with knowing what is important to you and how to design your life around that.
Chris and Janet Attwood, authors of the NY Times Best Selling book, The Passion Test, say that our passions are the breadcrumbs that lead us to our purpose in life. The flavor of these breadcrumbs will change over time, however, they always guide you to the essence of what will bring you the most fulfillment and success in your life.
As 2010 comes to a close, take some time to uncover what your passions are and let them lead you to creating a new year filled with all of the things that you desire and deserve. Buy a book, take a class, hire a coach-whatever you do, find the breadcrumbs that will lead you home; home to living your purpose and being the best you can be—just for you!

Don’t Let the Bast**ds Get You Down!

Ever wonder why despite the ups and downs you continue doing what you do? Why you continue the daily grind, sometimes seeing little in return? Me too. Sometimes I think, “Why am I busting my a** doing this?” Where’s the reward? And then something magical happens to remind me…

It’s our big, annual event, the Prosperity Conference & Expo, a two-day coming together of like-minded, positive, success-oriented people joining forces with the express purpose of building our businesses and building our lives. A lineup of success speakers, millionaire mentors and victim to victory triumphs meant to inspire, educate and motivate. And the ultimate goal – to change lives.  Marianne Williamson, author of “Return to Love” among other “Course in Miracles” based books said:

“Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, our greatest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

That’s the goal of the Prosperity Conference – to demolish fear so that we embrace our power and use it to make our world not just better, but the best we can make it.

This year was the pinnacle. This year the breakthroughs were extraordinary. People sought me out the entire weekend to share their Ah-Ha Moments, the perfect partnerships they created, their epiphanies, that one thing they needed to see, hear, feel that’s now taking them to the next level. It was magical. Really, magical.

They reminded me that the time, effort, energy and work required to make the conference happen was beyond worth it. Putting on an event for hundreds of people is a major undertaking:  selling tickets, managing speakers, enrolling volunteers, on and on and on…it was easy to get lost in the details and forget what I was working toward.

I’m changing my world even though I don’t always see it right away. So are you. In every person you touch, you change your piece of the world. You may not have a big annual event to provide immediate testimony, but you are changing your world nevertheless. What’s your vision, your dream? Look right now at your day to day, remind yourself of your vision, your passion, your dream. Keep going. There’s no feeling in the world like accomplishing what you set out to accomplish. It’s magical, it’s powerful and it’s joyful!

A New Recipe

Have you heard the story about the woman who makes a roast for dinner twice a month?  Every time she cooks this dish, she cuts the ends of the roast off before  putting it in the pan. After watching his wife do this for many years, her husband asks, “why do you cut the ends off and throw them away? ”  Her response, ”my mom did it that way, so I do it that way. ” He asked, “Why did your mom do it that way?” She asked her mom that very same question and discovered  that she cut the ends off because the roast did not fit in the pan that she used!

How many times do you do the same thing, because you have always done it that way – even when it is a waste of  time, energy or roast?

Is it time to change your recipe? Here at the Joy Factor, we offer four delightful ingredients that will support you in not having to “cut the ends off of your roast” . Try this new recipe and see what it tastes like:

1 part Connection to Purpose – When you know what is most important to you and you line your life up with that, joy happens!

1 part Authentic Expression – My friend Laura Biering has a wonderful tag on her car, it says, B U Now. You are perfect as you are, share that with the world and your Joy Factor will increase.

1 part Self – Care – Fill your personal fountain with things that will allow you to be the best you can be for yourself and others. What can you do for your self today, that will fill your fountain and spirit?

1 part Strategic Optimism - Having a plan that supports you in choosing joy each day is a powerful structure that empowers you on  days that you are less than joyful.

You get to choose how much of these ingredients to use in your recipe to live your best life.  A dash of this, a pinch of that, a cup and a half of this. If you want different results, make different choices!

What will your new recipe be?

Crash!

A_Young_Kid_on_a_Tricycle_Royalty_Free_Clipart_Picture_090504-025261-282009Last week I was driving past a bunch of kids playing in a playground. They were having so much fun! As I was passing them, I watched a little boy, about 4 or 5 years old, crash his tricycle into the fence. It was hard to tell if he couldn’t stop, or if he was intentionally looking to bounce off of the fence. When I looked back, from the red light that stopped me, I saw that he got up, dusted himself off and got right back on his tricycle.

That kid inspired me and reminded me that there are times in our lives that we are going to “crash”.  At that point, we have a choice. Do we get up, dust our knees off and keep going? Or, do we stop a minute, access the damage and make choices accordingly?

The key to raising your Joy Factor, so that you are  living a life that you are madly in love with, is to be conscious about your choices.  There is no right or wrong-only what is. If you can bounce back up like one of those weebles, remember them?  Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down. Take what you can from the experience and move on.

Everytime we are stopped on our paths, it is for a reason. Opportunities to make sure we are going in the right direction are presented to us again and again.  When these choices arise, I invite you to use the components of the Joy Factor to support you in deciding what your next steps are. Is it in alignment with your Passions and Purpose, your Authentic Self? Does it support your commitment to Self Care and Strategic Optimism? Look there and then choose what your next steps are.  In the meantime, look out for fences and remember to use your brakes-sometimes slowing down will prevent that crash! That is a another conversation for another day.

With conscious joyful awareness,

Wendy

Beginning of the Joy Factor Experience

joy_ornament01What is it about joy that people want in their lives? Is it a feeling, is it a “something,” a craving? Is it the opposite of feeling sadness or fear? Is it wanting something that you think you can’t have, like straight hair instead of curly, or blue eyes instead of green ones?. I know that joy is something that I wanted all of my life, and still do! There are times that I do find joy in a delicious piece of dark, rich chocolate, but when the chocolate is gone, the joy is gone. If someone could create a chocolate bar that had sustainable, joyful feelings as one of its benefits …hmmmm …it could be the Mounds of Joy Bar, the feeling lasts long after you’re picking the coconut out of your teeth. I would buy it by the case, wouldn’t you?

Over the last 3ish years, I have been on an intentional joy journey. I now realize that I have actually been on it my whole life; I just thought I was out for a good time. And boy, did I have them – lots of them – with friends, family, strangers, clients, employers – you name it. It is about a good time. But some of the main factors of joy for me, pre-January 2006, were filled with lots of things that I found outside of myself. The list was long and I am sure that a few of my items are on your list as well; some of them still are. They are the classic examples of sex, drugs and rock and roll. Those were the early years that lasted until I was in my early 30s. It is all perspective isn’t it?

I then started getting a taste of the finer things in life: nice clothes, shoes, good food, shoes, travel to fun places; did I mention shoes? More things that I thought would bring me joy from the outside in. The funny thing was that I was also a personal development junkie, reading all of the greats: Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Shatki Gawain, etc. I got to see them in person, meet them and tell lots of other people what they could do to live a better life. The challenge was that I was really not walking my talk. The more that I thought I was, the more I was attached to certain things and to being controlling.

I am sure that nobody has any idea what I am talking about here. Wake up everyone, let’s get on the joy journey! What I am trying to express here is that joy is one of those things that lives inside of us, like our heart, kidney, liver and lungs. Breathe in the joy and then breathe it out. As we do our best to take care of these things in our body, it is a good thing to work on taking care of what we can do to raise our joy factor. Imagine a life filled with increased joy, being yourself, expressing yourself authentically and feeling awesome doing it! Being clear on the direction you are going in (for now), having tools to support you in being a strategic optimist – yes, there is a strategy here – don’t you love a good plan? And how about some more self-love in this yummy recipe?

If you are anything like me, and I believe that you are, then you are probably starting to wonder, “Hmmm. . .how do I get some more of this joy thing in my life? Where do I sign up?” Of course. You are in the right place at the right time. Like attracts like, you know.

What is one thing that would bring you joy today? My dog Abbey Road just crawled up on the couch with me—I love when she sticks her nose under my hand and says –“pet me mommy!” The simplicity of giving her a few minutes of my time brings her lots of joy.
What would you like to spend a few minutes doing today that would bring you joy? Is it in the garden, with your journal, kids, or on the phone with a girlfriend that you have not connected with for awhile? Start small … stop long enough to ask yourself if you plan to raise your joy factor and be a part of this joy movement, what is the next right thing to do?

I am going to take a nap.
