The Joy Factor

One Size Fits All

one size fits allThat label has always given me a rise. How can that be true? I can see if it said, one size fits most or one size fits some. The only place that I see where one size fits all is around choosing to be joyful.
My sister Lisa calls me the accessory Aunt. I love to buy Jake and Emily, my niece and nephew, cool hats, scarves, shoes, bags, etc. Besides getting the right color or style, these type of things are one size fits most. She also calls me Trendy Wendy—we will not go there today!
I believe that them favorite accessory of the season is to choose joy. That’s right, in the next holiday gift edition of Oprah magazine; you will see Strategic Optimism, listed as the perfect gift for anyone in your family.
Imagine what it would be like if when everyone was getting dressed each day, they made a conscious decision to choose joy. And whatever piece of clothing they chose, would remind them to choose joy during the day. We all need a reminder, as life offers us many opportunities to forget that joy is a choice. Whether it is having to spend time with people who are less than optimistic or just forgetting that joy is a choice, some type of structure for joy is always good.
Choosing what your structure is going to be is part of creating your strategy around optimism. Sometimes the choice can show up in an unusual kind of way.
I have had a noise in my car that has been driving me crazy. It sounds like something is rolling around in my car door and I cannot figure out how to stop it. I made a choice this morning. Instead of letting it drive me crazy, I am going to choose to let it be a reminder to be joyful. We can all use that reminder when we are in the car! This shift of perspective has changed my driving experience.
What will support you in choosing joy? What structure have you used or will you use?
Besides the rolling ball in the car door—know that whenever you see me with a scarf around my neck, I am choosing joy!

About Wendy Watkins
Wendy is a joyful, vibrant human being who sees possibilities everywhere she goes. Whether she is working with a coaching client, creating a piece of art or riding her bicycle 100 miles in one day, the joy of possibility is one of her favorite perspectives. Alot of her joy comes from spending time with her husband Matt and their 2 four-legged kids, Abbey Road and Eli. It also comes from listening to good music, spending time in nature, eating good food and being with friends and family. When all of that happens together, she is in joyful bliss.
